Daniel was born on the 26th of December, 1874 in Prince Edward Island, Canada and he joined the US Marine Corps in Boston in August of 1896. Soon after, it was his actions as a Private during the Spanish-American War that would earn him the Medal of Honor. The citation reads:

On board the U.S.S. Marblehead during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Campbell set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.

Daniel J Campbell died on the 28th of April, 1955 at the age of 80 and is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mattapan, Massachusetts.
